We tested the best toddler and baby night lights — here’s what lulls our kids to sleep

Getting your little one to sleep through the night can be tough. Around 30% of toddlers struggle with sleep, and that means a lot of tired parents dealing with bedtime battles. A simple night light can help, offering comfort, easing fears, and making those middle-of-the-night wake-ups a bit easier.

Rosey Davidson, infant sleep consultant and founder of Just Chill Baby Sleep, agrees and says, “Night lights can be incredibly helpful in supporting both practical needs and emotional comfort. For babies and toddlers, a dim light can ease fears of the dark, support overnight feeds or nappy changeswithout overstimulating them, and create a sense of security."

She adds, "The key is to use lighting that doesn’t get in the way of the body’s natural sleep hormones or mess with sleep patterns. We’re meant to sleep in the dark, so it’s important to keep things as dark as possible when we can."

We’ve rounded up the best baby and toddler night lights for 2025 and asked Rosey for her top tips on what features parents should look for  to support healthy sleep habits.

How we chose and tested the best toddler and baby night lights

We know bedtime isn’t always smooth sailing, so we went on a mission to find the best night lights to help both you and your little ones get some well-earned sleep. We looked into the most popular night lights for babies and toddlers and picked a bunch of favourites for our panel of parents to try out with their kids ranging from newborns right up to eight-year-olds.

We didn’t just go by the product specs, either. We checked out what other parents were saying online, read expert reviews, and kept an eye out for night lights that have scooped up Mother&Baby awards. Real customer reviews were super helpful too, they gave us a good sense of what actually works (and what doesn’t).

Our parent testers used the lights in all kinds of everyday situations from tough bedtimes and late-night wake-ups to potty training runs and family trips. They looked at things like brightness, warmth, how easy they were to use, how sturdy they felt, and handy features like timers and calming sounds. Safety and value for money were also big factors.

After all that real-life testing, we’ve pulled together honest feedback to help you find just the right night light to keep your little one calm, cosy, and snoozing peacefully through the night.

Meet Ewan the Dream Sheep, the cuddly bedtime buddy so many mums swear by. It’s not just a cute plush, it plays a 20-minute soundtrack of soothing white noise, heartbeat, and womb sounds that really help calm babies down.

Our mum tester, Samantha Walker, who reviewed Ewan for the Mother & Baby Awards 2018, said, “My little one is four months old, and the womb sound is his absolute favourite. He sits smiling and giggling when Ewan comes out with us in the pram, which means I can get on with things while he’s entertained. The soft glowing light also helps him focus for longer than usual. Plus, Ewan really helps him sleep, he actually sleeps through now, which never happened before. It definitely soothes him, making any mum’s life a whole lot easier.”

The deluxe version even has a motion sensor that kicks in when baby stirs, playing the sounds automatically so you don’t have to rush in every time. The only downsides? Ewan isn’t machine washable and runs on batteries, but if your little one struggles with sleep, it’s well worth it for the peaceful nights.

The Chicco Next2 Stars Projector is a clever little addition to any bedtime routine, especially for babies who need a gentle nudge to drift off. It fits easily onto most cots and cribs, including the Chicco Next2Me, and creates a lovely, calming atmosphere with soft starry lights projected onto the ceiling. The glow isn’t too bright or overstimulating, making it just right for winding down.

One of the standout features is the 30 minutes of soothing sounds it offers, from classical music and nature to more ambient new-age tracks. The volume can be adjusted too, so you can keep things soft and peaceful. Parents often mention how calming the projection is, one mum said, “The stars on the ceiling mesmerise her, and I love that it kicks in when she cries. She even plays with the little teddy in the morning.”

Speaking of which, the removable soft toy is a lovely extra. It’s machine-washable, which is a bonus, and adds that bit of comfort babies seem to love. Another parent shared how her little one stayed engaged longer with this than with a basic nightlight. She said it worked best when he was already sleepy, and that the light-changing effects were really soothing. She also found the cry-activation sensor useful, although she did get a bit of a fright when it turned on while the crib was empty.

Despite some noting that it does go through batteries fairly quickly if used constantly, the overall experience wins most parents over. It’s a gentle, thoughtful design that doesn’t overwhelm, and it’s incredibly easy to use. For parents looking for something that settles their baby and gives them a bit of extra time to breathe, or maybe even make that long-awaited coffee, this is a solid choice.

Light Tonie is a wonderful choice. This gentle night light combines a soft, warm glow with beautifully composed melodies to create a calm, soothing atmosphere perfect for winding down after an exciting day. It features 4 dimmable brightness levels to suit different sleepy time stages from settling in to helping toddlers fall back asleep if they wake during the night.

I love to snuggle up with my little guy at the end of the day and put this on to help us wind down. It is priced a bit high for my liking, but if you look at it as more than just a tonie but a nightlight as well? ...then yeah, it's still overpriced. But at least it's cute.”

Best 2-in-1 night light and thermometer

Expert rating:

Tommee Tippee Gro-Egg Room ThermometerTommee Tippee

If you're a fan of baby gear that multitasks, this clever colour-changing thermometer is one to consider. It glows different colours depending on the room temperature, so you’ll know at a glance if your little one’s space is too hot, too cold, or just right.

As our mum tester Rachel said, “This really does a simple job of telling you the room temperature, but there is something satisfying about having the colour glow ‘scale’. I’m comparing that to a thermostat in my hallway, which technically does the same thing but is very boring!”

Alongside giving you quick visual cues, the gentle night light also provides a soft, comforting glow for your baby, whatever colour it’s shining. It’s a small but handy way to feel more in control at bedtime.

Rachel adds, “It gave me peace of mind always being aware of the room temp and therefore how to dress my baby. I would describe it as a nice, but not necessary, gadget.”

That said, it may work better in homes where the temperature fluctuates. “My only criticism is that my flat is very hot, so the Groegg always glowed bright red for ‘danger – your room is too hot’, and there was little I could do. Once I knew it was always red, it became a bit useless,” Rachel added. “But in a cooler house that has more variation, it would be much more useful.”

A smart little buy for parents who want a quick, reassuring way to monitor nursery temperature, especially in homes where the thermostat doesn’t tell the full story.

Best night light and sippy cup combined

Expert rating:
4.0
Lite Cup Sippy Cup
Price: £17.27

Looking for a multitasking product for your toddler? This classic sippy cup does double duty as a softly glowing night light, perfect for little ones around 12 months and up who are discovering their independence (and maybe testing your patience!).

At a bargain price, it’s definitely worth trying to see how your toddler reacts to this flexible, battery-powered cup. It’s easy to clean and portable too, so great for sleepovers or trips away.
One parent shared, “Doesn't leak as much as other similar cups we have had. It took my son a few tries to work out how to drink from it but he loves it now. It only really leaks if it is dropped, which my son loves to do too as it splatters a little. Typical mischievous 18-month-old.”

The night light isn’t very bright but, as this parent said, “that’s not a big problem. It glows enough to see it in the dark. More of a novelty attached to what is otherwise a brilliant cup.”

If your toddler loves to carry their cup everywhere, this fun combo could be just what you need for bedtime hydration and a little extra comfort.

Pros

  • Combines a non-spill sippy cup with a gentle night light
  • Easy to clean and portable for travel or sleepovers
  • Durable and mostly leak-proof, even with toddler antics
  • Affordable and practical for everyday use

Cons

  • Some toddlers may take time to learn how to use it properly
Power:1x CR2 battery
Size:9.5 x 6.5 x 15 cm
  • Dishwasher safe when night light removed
  • Turns on in low light and off in bright light
  • Integrated night light
  • Spill-resistant sippy cup

Gro-Light 2-in-1 Night LightAmazon

Rrp: £19.99

Price: £14.99

The Gro-Light 2-in-1 Night Light offers two lighting options in one, a main bright light or a soft night light. It easily attaches to bayonet or standard room lights and adapts automatically from a soft glow at night to a brighter light during the day. Our favourite feature? It doesn’t require plugging in, charging, or batteries, it just works with your existing lighting setup! The gentle white LED glow means your nighttime feeds won’t disturb your little one.

One parent shared their experience, “With our newborn, we didn’t want a lot of light at night but needed enough to see and change her with minimal disturbance. This attaches between your bulb holder and bulb, with a control to adjust light levels. Switch once for the low light, switch off and on again for the main bulb, it’s so easy.”

Adding, “There are two connectors available, screw and bayonet, so make sure you get the right one for your fitting! I found the bayonet fitting cheaper and bought a screw-to-bayonet converter for extra flexibility.”

Pros

  • Two light features
  • Adapts to light feature
  • Adjustable amount of light

Cons

  • Some found the light too dark
Size:9 x 9 x 10 cm
  • Running cost of the Grolight is 66 per cent lower than a dimmer switch
  • Adjustable brightness
  • Fits and adapts to your existing light or lamp (bayonet/screw)

Infant sleep expert Rosey Davidson shares what to look for in a night light

Here’s what she recommends:

Sleep-friendly colours

“Opt for amber, red, orange, or pink hues. These colours are less likely to disrupt sleep and are soothing for bedtime. Avoid blue and bright white lights, as they can signal to the brain that it’s time to wake up. We produce a sleep hormone called melatonin when it’s dark, this process can be disrupted or delayed if it is too bright.”

Adjustable brightness

“Dimmable lights allow parents to set just the right level of light for comfort without overstimulation.”

White noise features (optional)

“If the light includes a sound machine, ensure the volume is safe (ideally under 50 decibels) and that it has a continuous play option to avoid disruptions from sudden loops or shutoffs. It should also be at least 2 metres from the baby’s head.”

Timer or motion sensor options

“These can be helpful if you only want the light to come on briefly during wake-ups.”

Portability and safety

“Cordless, rechargeable options are great for reducing hazards and making nighttime feeds easier.”

How can a night light help my toddler overcome their fear of the dark?

It's completely natural for your child to sometimes feel scared at night, so to help them overcome their fear of the dark, try these five handy tips:

Try a kids' night light: Leaving a light on is a quick and easy way to alleviate any fears. Buying one your tot can learn to turn on and off by themselves is a good idea, as they'll learn to use it as a comfort if they wake up scared in the night.

You could also buy your little one a light projector to turn on if they wake up in the night. The memorising patterns will help to keep them calm so they'll soon be soothed back to the land of nod.

Hold a monster hunt: Search the room with your toddler before bed and make a game out of checking for monsters. You could also bring in a "monster spray" – aka a spritz of water with lavender oil to scare any ghouls away – and let them have fun with that.

Buy a special toy to 'look after' your child: Whether it's a big teddy or a Buzz Lightyear, think about going on a shopping trip and buying your toddler a special "guardian toy" to watch over and reassure her at night.

Make a dream catcher: You probably remember making one yourself in school, use a feathery mobile to 'catch bad dreams' and keep them away.

Have a clear out: Ask your toddler if there is anything in their room that scares them. If so, put it somewhere else.

Best toddler and baby night lights FAQs

What age do children need night lights?

Many toddlers start asking for a night light around the age of two. That’s also when nightmares and bedtime fears can begin. A soft, comforting light can help them feel safe and more confident falling asleep on their own.

Is it safe to leave a night light on all night?

Yes, most modern night lights are made to stay on all night. They're low-energy and safe to use, but it’s always best to check the product’s safety instructions first. Just make sure the light isn’t too bright or placed near anything like bedding or curtains.

Do I really need a night light?

Not every family uses one, but a night light can be really helpful. It gives just enough glow for night-time feeds or changes without waking your baby fully and it’s a gentle way to make toddlers feel more secure.

What colour light is best for babies?

Go for warm, soft colours like red, amber or orange. These are soothing and won’t mess with your little one’s sleep. Try to avoid blue or white lights, research shows they can make it harder for children to fall asleep.
